Courage Checks
« on: January 28, 2016, 07:37:30 AM »
I'm brand new to the game (haven't even played yet).  I picked up BG/HW for me and my son.
As I read the rules, I'm trying to understand courage checks.  For BG/HW, are there really own two things that would trigger this:

Pre-Combat: Getting Pinched
Post-Combat: Getting knocked into the Yellow or Red

The rules make it sound much more complicated - but is it really that simple?  Or am I missing something?

Thank you!

Welcome, Professor X!

You just described what causes "Rout Checks," which is one type of "Courage Check.  One other time you take Rout Checks is when the unit already is in the Red and takes additional damage.  (but still has at least one box left).

The other type of "Courage Check" is the "Fear Check," which happens pre-combat when a non-Fearsome unit is charged by a Fearsome or Terrifying unit, or a Fearsome unit is charged by a Terrifying unit.  (Most units are non-Fearsome; look for the keyword "Fearsome" or "Terrifying" on the card.)

I'll second Kevin's sentiment of welcome.

Welcome to the game :).

I'm sure you saw this already, but don't forget units are at -1 Courage in the Yellow and -2 in the Red, and that counts when they make their rout check as well.
