I was just thinking about this while reading the back-up thread in the rules column. I wonder what the effects would be if this rule were in place:
Backup as tactical doctrine
Identical swordsmen or spearmen units that begin the game one behind the other may be considered one unit by giving the back unit a B during the order writing phase of setup when giving the back unit its orders. As long as they remain in back to front contact they are considered one unit and share the same SO's. When marking losses Mark all the green boxes on both units before marking any Yellow boxes, and the same for Yellow/Red boxes. Not until all green boxes are removed from both units does the unit take a Courage check. While in B formation, all courage checks are made as one unit.
Changing the SO of one of the units or direct controlling one of the units will cause the B to be erased.
By expending a Command Action the B may also be erased.
The B order may only be given to a unit during the setup phase.
